A Statement on St. Patrick’s Day

March 13th, 2020

KINGSTON, ON – The AMS wishes to inform students about precautionary measures regarding the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day. Kingston has handled the pandemic tremendously, and it is important to ensure the community remains safe. To reduce the risk of overwhelming first responders and the spread of COVID-19, together, let’s stay home and drink responsibly this St. Patrick’s Day.

We know the limitations on gatherings this year has been challenging, however, we applaud our peers for adhering to guidelines to ensure the safety of the Queen’s and Kingston communities. With news of the vaccines, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The KFL&A Medical Officer of Health has implemented a new Section 22 Order as a precautionary measure to help limit the spread of COVID-19 in the Kingston community.  Those who break the order can be subject to a $5,000 fine and students may be considered as breaking the Queen’s University Student Code of Conduct.

The Section 22 Class Order is effective from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2021 until Sunday, March 21, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. The Order, which is in effect city wide, prohibits hosting or attending indoor or outdoor social gatherings with more than five persons. The Order also includes several restrictions for businesses that serve alcohol.

At-home gatherings are limited to 5 people. You may gather at home with your household – or if you live in a house with four or less people, you may add one additional non-household member. If you live with more than 5 people, you may gather at home with all your housemates but are not permitted to add any additional guests.

The University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) will also be in effect for St. Patrick’s Day. Click here to view the City of Kingston’s UDSI FAQ online. Those who gather may be subject to Administrative Monetary Penalties: click here for more information.

Pandemic gatherings pose a greater risk to the community. Be smart, celebrate safely, and stay home this St. Patrick’s Day.

If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please stay home and get tested. The on-campus clinic assessment centre is located in Mitchell Hall and is open Monday to Friday from 9-4. Call Student Wellness Services at 613-533-2506 to book an appointment.
